Bald Eagle

Where They're Found in Arizona

The bald eagle can be found throughout Arizona, particularly near lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and riparian areas. Common locations include the Salt River, Verde River, Roosevelt Lake, Bartlett Lake, and portions of the Colorado River.

What They Eat

Bald eagles primarily feed on fish but will also eat waterfowl, rabbits, carrion, and other small mammals when available.

Natural Predators

Adult bald eagles have very few natural predators. Eggs and young eaglets may be vulnerable to ravens, great horned owls, raccoons, and other nest predators.

Migration and Seasonal Activity

Many Arizona bald eagles remain in the state year-round. Some northern populations migrate through Arizona during winter months.

Living Style

Bald eagles are typically solitary or found in breeding pairs. They build large nests near water sources and often return to the same nesting area year after year.

What to Do If You Encounter One

Observe from a distance and avoid approaching nesting sites. Use binoculars or a camera with zoom capabilities for viewing.

How to Protect Yourself

Bald eagles rarely pose a threat to humans. Give nesting birds plenty of space and avoid disturbing them.
