Gila Monster

(poisonous)

Where They're Found in Arizona

Gila monsters inhabit desert regions of southern and central Arizona, especially in areas with rocky terrain and desert scrub vegetation.

What They Eat

They feed on bird eggs, reptile eggs, small mammals, young birds, and carrion.

Natural Predators

Coyotes, raptors, and larger mammals occasionally prey on young Gila monsters.

Migration and Seasonal Activity

They do not migrate. Most activity occurs during spring and early summer. During extreme heat and winter cold, they spend much of their time underground.

Living Style

Gila monsters are generally solitary and spend most of their lives hidden underground.

What to Do If You Encounter One

Give it plenty of space and never attempt to handle it.

How to Protect Yourself

Stay on established trails and watch where you place your hands and feet. Although bites are rare, they can be painful and require medical attention.
